The Vyborg Port: New Technologies of Handling - Hydroxide

In October the Vyborg Port finished the adoption of new hydroxide handling technology.
Earlier it was necessary to handle this cargo from ships directly into the cars that reduced Port carrying capacity and made great stress on the internal logistics in the Port.
The Port started to handle hydroxide only since May and in July it was already possible to seriously increase the handling capacity. By the end of October it had been handled almost 32 000 tones of cargo in total.
The reconstruction of railways and some other infrastructure facilities gives new opportunities but requires new approaches to technology. As the result of engineering research Port management decided to change the system of handling.
In November the Port is going to increase twice the handling, comparatively to October.
Now the handling is carried out using newly created warehouse that  allows to increase the capacity even further. At the same time a number of restrictions connected with railway capacity and labor is lifted.
A wagon turnover has increased due to the handling growth directly from the warehouse.
The handling of hydroxide plays an important role in the structure of Port turnover. The Port works in this direction in the close partnership with RUSAL company – Port's old and reliable partner.
Today the share of hydroxide in the import handling is more than 30%. Recently, following the results of the first half year this cargo provided less than 10%.
In the near future the approach to handling technology concerning other types of cargo will be changed also. These solutions became possible only now because Port has seriously improved Port's infrastructure during summer - autumn 2011.
